RSS

context for this post: im reading a social history of masculinities in skating

  • Gwen: it just occured to me that thomas blake is dcskate's philipe candeloro*, if there is a dc character who is going to skate without clothes on it is him, and now i can't stop laughing
  • Gwen: dcskate: the gift that keeps on giving
  • Dorian: kjdfhkjdsh good
  • Gwen: addendum to the katarina rule**: the thomas blake rule. you do have to WEAR a costume
  • Dorian: "after Mr. Blake elected to skate in his underwear, we have reviewed the costume rules and chosen to revise them"
  • Gwen: yesssssss
  • Gwen: (dcskate's katarina rule is probably the kory anders rule)
  • Dorian: yes
  • Gwen: ((((((((omg he's our candeloro and LAWTON IS OUR ELVIS*** the media paints them as the Real Manly Man Saviours Of This Sport except that they're dating and then skating media eats itself alive)))))))
  • Gwen: (i don't know why i felt that this statement requires so many parentheses)
  • * 1990s french skater known for skating to rambo and the godfather and also for. taking his clothes off during exhibitions.
  • ** the rule that your costume must have a bottom, be it a skirt or pants, after katarina witt's gymnast-leotard-style costume that Shocked The Skating World
  • *** 1990s canadian skater known for his jumps, complete lack of graceful line, and martial arts skills; nicknamed "the terminator"

Shizuka Arakawa’s Turandot costume for the 2003-2004 season. It started off (top left, 2003 Grand Prix Final) with much less bling than it had by the time of the 2004 World Championships. Another thing to note is how interesting and elegant the back is, although the skirt was a little too short.

WE STILL REMEMBER THIS BLOG EXISTS, I PROMISE.
As I go through this blog full o’ costumes, I’m going to share ones I think these characters could use (Dorian I know you’re reading it too plz do the same!!)
Here’s a Cass!

Geek Fashion Friday: Wonder Woman Jumper

How gorgeous is this?! It could be yours too, if you know how to knit that is. Originally created by Kristy Lothian, she has shared the pattern - or in her words, a “recipe” - on how to make it right here.

so it’s slightly worrying that my immediate reaction was “wow team themyscira has WAY BETTER sweaters than team canada

but that’s why this is here

As we were browsing costumes, we found lots of Dick Grayson-appropriate sequin-covered v-necks. But none of them seemed to have particularly silly collars! We worried that they were just too cumbersome or un-aerodynamic and that our dream of turning Nightwing’s costume into a skating costume just by adding skates to it was impossible.
Mitsura Matsumura (JPN) to the rescue!
And that’s what I have gathered so far. Expect more of these posts, though, I’m nowhere near finished going through the gallery.

Lloyd Eisler (here with Katarina Matousek) demonstrates that yes, skating costumes CAN go low enough to be Perez’ Nightwing actually!
